| DESCRIPTION | Heavy duty pair of antique French 19th century solid high grade silver sugar nippers cum tongs with inset steel cutting teeth and a floral engraving to the hinge box. Up until around 1900 sugar came in a cone-shaped loaf that was rather hard. Special steel nippers or a mallet and chisel were used to first break up the loaf. Once smashed into suitable chunks the sugar would be placed into a sugar box and transferred to the dining or drawing room. These nippers would then be used to further trim the sugar and transfer it to you cup, pot or jug. |
