DESCRIPTION | High quality and heavy antique English Georgian solid sterling silver salver with an interesting original armorial engraving featuring a crest above the Cap of Maintenance all within some typical neo-classical mantling. The crest, cap and shield with multiple devices should prove a rewarding 'rainy day' project to discover the original owner. The salver has three wonderful ball and claw feet reminiscent of the period forty years earlier yet has Bead Edge decoration that was the height of fashion in 1781 London. The reverse retains original patination with the assayer's scrape still visible to the left side and a set of beautifully struck and clear hallmarks. |
SILVERSMITH | Joseph Steward II |
DATE or HALLMARK | 1781 |
ASSAY OFFICE | London |
WEIGHT in GRAMS | 563 |
WIDTH | 10", 254mm |
SILVER STANDARD | ·925 sterling silver |
CONDITION | gorgeously thick silver with no erasure or repairs. Bump to one leg that has visibly impressed the rim above. Outer rim of beads are lovely BUT inner rim of around 250 beads have holed tops to about 220. Not an unattractive feature but clearly not original and reasonably expense to correct. Consequently I am selling this piece at the metal value although it will make a very attractive piece for display or daily use. Not recently polished so complete with minor surface marks commensurate with light normal use. |
