DESCRIPTION | Antique English Georgian solid sterling silver salver with the original armorial engraving, gadroon edge decoration, and wonderful ball and claw feet. Verso is a full set of fantastic hallmarks just above the scratch engraved 'Capt. Bell, Royal Regt'. There have been several notable Captain Bells of various Royal Regiments and I suspect that this Captain Bell was not the first owner of this salver. Also still visible to the reverse is the original assayer's scrape mark which I am always pleased to see. I am having trouble translating the motto below the fabulous armorial. It is something like 'Every Other Day You Will Meet People Who Disagree With You' or, and probably less likely, 'You Will Have Babies Every Other Day'. Points will be awarded to the first person to email me the correct translation. |
