DESCRIPTION Scarce set of nine antique Georgian Irish Feather Edge pattern table knives with traditional pitch loaded solid sterling silver handles and steel blades. The original crest engraving to the handles looks like a wolf but I think is actually the boar's head known to have been employed by several families. The metal to both handle and blade is thick and strong throughout and is fit for hundreds of years more service. This is very unusual for Georgian handled steel knives. The old steel blade is harder than modern stainless and will take a sharper edge and hold it for longer. Blades marked LAMFREY except for one Edwardian English replacement.
SILVERSMITH only very rubbed fragments of the mark remain
DATE or HALLMARK no date letter but Feather Edge first appeared in London in the early 1770s so it is not unreasonable to expect the pattern in Dublin by the 1780s. Hibernia is marked to all and is of the oval punch outline form. The Harp Crowned is marked to all and is of the shaped outline form. There is no duty mark. This all fits nicely with a 1780s date.
