DESCRIPTION | Georgian Onslow Feather Edge pattern solid sterling silver sauce ladle. I am suspecting this piece may be converted from an Old English pattern example. Butt joint to the stem is not much of a
concern as it is below the hallmarks and the scroll section of this pattern was usually cast separately to the bowl section. However there is also a horizontal joint from the butt joint to just under the scroll terminal. The only
reason that I can think of for doing this is to alter the pattern of the terminal. The Feather Edge decoration would have been added at the same time. Fair amount of rubbing to the edge decoration just where you would hold the piece
to use so I suspect the pattern conversion was done long ago to add a ladle to an earlier Onslow service when the genuine example was not readily available.
Fake or honest conversion? I think honest conversion as no attempt has been made to disguise the addition of the Onslow front. Perhaps to be technically legal the slither of silver added to the front to form the scroll pattern should be hallmarked but there is no area large enough to take it without destroying the scroll. |
