DESCRIPTION Good and interesting antique English Georgian solid sterling silver SHERRY crescent label on possibly silver suspension chain. This is one of the very earliest examples by these makers and although the classic Phipps & Robinson crescent with typical bright-cut edge decoration this has soft, rounded points rather than the usual sharp points. They were also clearly having difficulty in striking their own punch, perhaps still getting to know this new shape.
SILVERSMITH Thomas Phipps & Edward Robinson
DATE or HALLMARK July 1783 (commencement of partnership and registration of first mark) to 30th November 1784 (introduction of duty and commensurate mark 1st December 1784). It is noted in the great work on this subject that 'After the imposition of duty they were punctilious in applying the king's head mark (even though there was still some doubt as to whether it was necessary), and they usually put the lion on too.'
