DESCRIPTION | Good quality and faithful reproduction of a Dutch silver gilt marriage box copied from an exhibit in The Metropolitan Museum of Art. These were made for their gift shop in the 1980s. Link; Marriage box | Dutch, probably Amsterdam | The Metropolitan Museum of Art. An expensive piece to produce at the time and has not been available for many years now. It would have been illegal to copy the hallmarks of the original piece onto the reproductions and the only photograph of the piece that I can find does not show the marks. A description of the hallmarks exists but I am not convinced by their interpretation. I also believe that their piece is very much older than they state. This example should be lightly marked 'MMA STERLING' to the base but instead there is (probably) a well executed erasure. The only reason that I can think for this is that at some point there has been an attempt to sell this piece as original. |
SILVERSMITH | mark not shown, possibly erased from the base |
DATE or HALLMARK | this reproduction mostly likely 1980s or 1990s. |
ASSAY OFFICE | no assay marks, possibly erased from the base |
WEIGHT in GRAMS | 97 |
HEIGHT | 2 ½", 66mm |
SILVER STANDARD | the original most likely to be the Netherlands' second grade of ·833 standard silver but as this is a United States made piece I expect it to be of ·925 sterling silver and internally gilded with pure gold. |
CONDITION | very good, be aware that this faithful reproduction includes the wear and rubbing to the original, probable erasure of marks to the base and an assay scrape to the side of one ball foot indicating solid silver and not silver plated. |
