DESCRIPTION | Massive Georgian silver 7-bar toast rack with gadroon and shell decoration, a crested handle and later rhodium plating. Rhodium is a very precious metal of a bright silver colour that will not tarnish. The process was available during the 1960s and 1970s for larger items such as this toast rack but was extremely expensive. Today I think it is only small items such as rings that are rhodium plated as anything else would cost too much. Personally I find the colour a bit too bright but can appreciate the benefits of plating an item for food use and it will never need polishing. |
