DESCRIPTION |
Useful set of nine Georgian silver Fiddle pattern dessert spoons with an interesting engraved crest and motto 'Crom A Boo' of Irish origin. On page 42 Pine states "Crom A Boo. Crom for ever. De Ros, Fitzgerald, Lord Fitzgerald of Kilmarnock, Dukes of Leinster, Purcell-Fitzgerald. Motto originally war-cry used by ancient Norman-Irish family of Fitzgerald. Crom is castle in Limerick, once belonging to the family who, although originally invaders in 1169-72, soon became Hiberniores ipsis Hibernis, Irish chieftains. The Irish war-cries were repeatedly prohibited by the English Parliament, but they did not cease until the complete conquest of Ireland under the Stuarts. Also used by De Ros, though their connection with Ireland is post-medieval". | ||
