Silfren and The Bedford Gallery

DESCRIPTION |
A very unusual silver plate mounted vesta case made from a George III 1797 cartwheel twopence and inset with an iron striker. The coin has been hand sawn in half and the old saw marks are still in evidence internally. The cartwheel twopence dated 1797 was minted in 1797 and 1798 by Matthew Boulton and James Watt at their Soho mint in Birmingham using the then state of the art steam driven equipment. It was made in copper and weighed two ounces, helping to make it one of Britain's least popular coins. | |

| DATE or HALLMARK |
