DESCRIPTION | Good and cased vintage English solid sterling silver reproduction of a mid-16th century seal top spoon, the bowl engraved with the arms and motto for Lloyds Insurance underwriters. The motto FIDENTIA translates as 'that by which in great and honourable undertakings our minds lay up in themselves confidence and assured hope'. Within the bowl the arms of Lloyd's, a shield device divided horizontally in two, on the upper half a cross and sword erect and on the lower half a fouled anchor. The arms are supported on either side by a sea lion bearing a trident erect. The crest on the top of the arms is a representation of HMS Lutine (of bell fame) in full sail. |
