Silfren and The Bedford Gallery
DESCRIPTION |
Beautiful gilded silver dessert serving set collected, decorated and cased mid-nineteenth century, consisting of a pair of Georgian Newcastle silver serving spoons and a Georgian London silver sifter ladle. The engraved decoration is unusual and eclectic, consisting of a swallow and dragonfly amongst oriental prunus, a band of floral and foliate and then another swallow perched amongst prunus. All pieces have a blank cartouche and the sifter piercing is highlighted with prick engraving. Each piece has a perfectly gilded bowl. The leather fitted case is lined with luscious purple silk. |

OVERALL CONDITION |
Beautiful. These sets were often made up from rather tired old spoons but this is not the case in this instance. These Newcastle spoons are both excellent and rare. |
MAJOR FAULTS |
none |
MINOR FAULTS |
couple of the sifter bowl piercings have gone through to their neighbours but this does not distract and I do not recommend any action. There is a good quality splice joint mid-way along the sifter stem. |
