DESCRIPTION

Interesting and very rare Exeter duty mark on a Georgian silver Old English pattern tea spoon, monogram engraved.

DATE or HALLMARK

Late 1804, early 1805. The cusped duty mark with a chunk taken out of the top in conjunction with the new oval lion passant is an extremely rare combination. See 'The Finial' vol. 19/02, pg. 12 for an excellent article 'Hallmarking of Exeter Small Spoons and Tongs 1796-1810' by Miles Harrison. This mark is shown in fig. 6.
