DESCRIPTION

Scarce set of six (5 + 1) Georgian silver hafted table knives with polished steel scimitar blades, all crested the same. The style of the loaded silver hafts and the shape of the steel blades is too late for the date, I would expect them to date from the 18th century, and close inspection reveals the answer. The five were made in 1827 to match the single earlier one. The earlier one has a fractionally thinner and longer blade.

SILVERSMITH

5 x William Eley II, 1 x Dru Drury II

DATE or HALLMARK

5 x 1827 and one earlier about 1775. Dru Drury II retired in 1794 and died in early 1804. Although a specialist knife-haft maker as his father, he is perhaps better known today as an entomological collector. His listing in the dictionary is the longest one by far and an interesting read.

OVERALL CONDITION

Very good used. A robust set that will still give many years of daily use/abuse providing that they are kept away from very hot water and dishwashers. Please be aware that old steel is very, very sharp.

MAJOR FAULTS

none

MINOR FAULTS

one seam appears to have a small split but in fact does not, the solder has just not fully flooded the joint. Several tiny little bumps commensurate with light use and certainly not worth removing in my opinion.
