DESCRIPTION Superb set of six antique English Georgian solid sterling silver Hanoverian pattern three tine table forks with an earl's coronet above a crest engraving and wonderful hallmarks. Crest is for the Earl of Anglesey; Valentia, Viscount (I, 1622) (archive.org)
As fork tines wear it is important to level them by clipping or stretching otherwise the wear is amplified on the shortest tines. The old silversmiths made their tines extra long to accommodate the expected levelling. After successive levelling the tines look stubby, the forks have reached the end of their useful life and are usually scrapped. This is why old forks are so rare today and even the stubby are becoming acceptable as good examples are seldom available. What makes this set so extraordinary is that although a little wear can be seen on some outer tines the rest are their original full length.
If you are interested in acquiring similar forks, and you probably are if you have read this far, you are welcome to supply an indication of your budget and I will add you to the wait list. These took eight years to find so I can make no promises.
