| DESCRIPTION | Exceptionally good pair of antique English Georgian solid sterling silver casters fitted with reducing sleeves within the tops. About one in sixty of these casters have reducing sleeves fitted and there is some debate about their originality. My belief is that they were fitted later when finer ground spices became more widely and cheaply available. The larger holes dispense far too much if the spice is finely ground such as modern pepper. The sleeves completely blank off alternate pierced panels and are pierced with smaller holes on the others thus making them suitable for modern use. No engraving to the bodies and a very discreet 'R·D' under the bases that are likely to be original. All pieces are correctly marked with very clear and well-struck hallmarks. |
