Silfren and The Bedford Gallery
DESCRIPTION |
Finest quality silver cigarette or cigar box in the style of a William IV snuff box with engine turned decoration and floral raised borders. The base is internally lined with cedar wood of a good thickness. The silver is of such heavy gauge that I believe I could stand on this box with out any negative consequences. The central cartouche has been erased and engraved again but the silver is so thick that it would take another erasure. Our silversmith could do this should you wish. The second engraving is likely to be mid-twentieth century and could possibly relate to Herbert Jay, the successful golfer of the early 1960's who won the PGA in 1960. An alternative to erasing the cartouche again would be to place a simple rectangular silver plaque over the cartouche to make a raised blank cartouche. The lid opens and closes with a satisfying swoosh reminiscent of the car doors of certain German manufacturers and the piano hinge is perfect. |
