DESCRIPTION

Scottish Georgian silver SHERRY label of good gauge and on a chunky suspension chain.

SILVERSMITH

James Stewart. I have found no image of his mark but he is known to have had at least one label assayed at Edinburgh at the right time for the trefoil duty mark. After elimination of all other contenders from their published marks he is the last man standing.

DATE or HALLMARK

circa 1806. The trefoil (three cusped) duty mark was introduced in 1797 and used for a few years afterwards. James Stewart is known to have assayed a wine label at Edinburgh in 1806.
