Silfren and The Bedford Gallery
DESCRIPTION |
Cased pair of Georgian silver Old English pattern table spoons with later 'berry' decoration. The quality of the later 'berry' decoration of these spoons can vary but in this case it is superb, as befits a pair of blanks by Hester Bateman. The gilded leather case is fitted out with sumptuous burgundy silk and velvet. To the base of the case is a label from George Birley & Company, Silversmiths, next to Old Bank, Worcester. George Birley appears to have been a retailer rather than a silversmith. Over his trade label is an interesting presentation note from Broadwas Court, Worcester dated 31/5/07 (1907). It reads 'Dear Miss Porter, Will you please accept the accompanying small present with my best wishes. Yours sincerely E. H. Hill.' A different hand, probably Miss Porter's has added 'A wedding present'. The E. H. Hill is probably Edward Henry Hill listed as living at Broadwas Court in 1879. |
